Why does Facebook matter? Innovation and Revolution

London, UK - 11th January 2011, 14:15 GMT

Dear ATCA Open & Philanthropia Friends

[Please note that the views presented by individual contributors are not necessarily representative of the views of ATCA, which is neutral. ATCA conducts collective Socratic dialogue on global opportunities and threats.]

$50 Billion

Facebook has recently been valued at $50 billion by Goldman Sachs. It now has 590 million users worldwide, making it five times larger than Twitter. If Facebook was a country, it would be the third largest in the world behind China and India. More than 30 billion content items are posted on Facebook every month and its revenue exceeds $2 billion per annum.

Innovation and Revolution

Asymmetric Power for Innovation: Is Social Media a Fad or the Biggest Shift since the Industrial Revolution?

1. What are your thoughts, observations and views?

2. We have dedicated significant resources over the last five years to understand and to harness the power of social media and its role in creating self-assembling dynamic networks. There is a way to benefit massively from this new technology without large-scale investment. The early adopters can leap forward significantly in comparison to their peer group. In fact, social media can help to cut costs drastically whilst helping to boost worldwide awareness for a particular cause, product or solution, without excessive need for cumbersome advertising and marketing. Social media’s capacity to provide immediate customer and stakeholder feedback is also extraordinary. We have found that social media, when used correctly, delivers unrivalled innovation at unprecedented speed. In some instances, it has the capacity to spark a revolution!

3. If there is an innovative way in which you or your organisation has benefited from social media, or you would like to harness social media for world-class innovation, we would be interested to hear from you..
