Derek Sykes and Derek Bond - the critial IT issues

London, UK - 26 February 2003, 12:30 GMT - The FBI has conceded that the British national Derek Bond, arrested in South Africa two weeks ago, was not Derek Sykes, a wanted fugitive. The mistaken identity has meant that Derek Bond has been held behind bars in South Africa for over two weeks whilst Derek Sykes has just been arrested in Las Vegas, USA.

Mistaken identities and identity theft are a critical issue in the 21st century, especially as criminal syndicates and terrorist organisations are targeted by law enforcement agencies and Internet connectivity continues to rise across the globe. Terrorists and criminal syndicates could continue to usurp identities of ill suspecting honest and upright citizens via the broadband (always on) Internet connections and other means of easy identity theft.
